About Dan Schroeder

Dan

Welcome! I’m Dan and I founded the ImprovedBrainHealth.com website to help people stay mentally sharp throughout their lives by adopting a healthy and realistic lifestyle. As you know, staying healthy requires knowledge, effort, and persistence at any age but especially as we grow older. The amount of information and advice out there on how to keep or restore mental clarity can be overwhelming and confusing, Where I think I can help is in clearing away the clutter and hype that produce frustration without results.

My Story and Brain Health

My education and experience is in healthcare process improvement engineering. While I am not a licensed clinician, I have done a lot of individual study of the science of brain health.  Since I am now retired and in my 70’s, I want to avoid cognitive decline for as long as possible and even overcome some of the memory lapses that I have experienced as I age.  Recently medical researchers have found that conditions like Alzheimer’s disease can be prevented, delayed, and even reversed if preventive step are taken early enough.  Cognitive decline is no longer considered inevitable as we age.

The Purpose of This Website

ImprovedBrainHealth.com exists to empower you by providing insights, encouragement, and practical advice to improve your current state of brain health.  Why would I want to do this?  In many countries, life expectancy often exceeds cognitive health expectancy. This means that while people are living longer due to advances in healthcare, nutrition, and living conditions, they may spend a significant portion of their later years dealing with cognitive decline. While medical advances have increased life expectancy, they haven’t always kept pace in preventing or treating cognitive decline.

One of the things people my age need the most is to stay mentally fit as long as possible so they can enjoy life to the fullest and fulfill a much-needed role in society as guides for younger generations. The world is changing faster and faster. We can no longer afford to put people on the sidelines who have accumulated the wisdom that maturity brings.

So who is this website for?  It’s for those who want to enjoy life and live with purpose by achieving and sustaining the highest level of mental functioning possible for their age and situation.  We all have our own individual situations in life and our own individual goals and expectations. My goal for you is to help you better understand your current state of brain health, to help you clarify your individual expectations for your desired level of brain health, and to bring your current situation and your goals closer together.

An Approach Customized to Your Individual Needs

Each of us is unique physically and psychologically with our own history and current state of health. While there are certain lifestyle variables that promote brain health, such as, exercise, diet, sleep, stress reduction, social connection, and mental activity.  First, we each need to know where we stand currently in relation to these variables. Second, we need to know what changes are needed to have the greatest impact on maintaining our brain health.  Third, we need to act accordingly eliminate the root causes of our specific problems.

As we develop and grow older, our approach to sustaining a healthy brain needs to change. Our bodies need more attention and  we need to be more careful about our habits to stay healthy.  At the same time, our efforts at staying mentally sharp should not become more arduous. We need to make our lives less complicated and more enjoyable. It’s important to know what should we offload and what changes to make to enjoy life more?
